WELCOME BACK TO A NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

 Mrs. R. Shaw

 FOURTH GRADE LOOPING

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas break! For the past two weeks the students have worked really hard. We are working on geometry - lines, line segments, rays, angles, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional figures.

HOMEWORK: Students have Accelerated Math each night. Most of the other work we are doing is in the classroom, although occasionally they have workbook pages or sheets to do at home. They receive notes in math each day to put in their binders. Please have them read over these notes as it will help on weekly tests and quizzes.

2010-2011 School Year Class Information

Attendance

It is very important your child is in school every day if he/she is able. While there will be circumstances that arise, please make every effort to get your student to school on time each morning (7:30a.m. – Tardy bell 7:40a.m.) Much of what we learn and experience in fourth grade occurs in the classroom. While we can provide make up work, please keep in mind that it is impossible to reproduce a day in the classroom. Much of what we do is not worksheet / textbook type material that can be easily sent home. The explanations, discussions, and group work we do at school are hard to make up. Please make attendance a top priority this year.

Information Cards

Please fill out the information card. List all the important numbers where you can be reached and your current address. If you have access to e-mail or internet, please list that information. It is important that we maintain correct addresses and phone numbers so that we can be in touch during the school year. If this information changes, please let us know as soon as possible and please send updated information with "proof of residency." Thank you!

Gadgets and Gizmos

No toys are allowed in the classroom unless permission is given by the teacher. This includes trading cards, game boys, etc. Silly bands are allowed ONLY if they stay on a students wrist during classes. If it is not specifically for a school project / assignment, then please keep it at home. As your child’s teacher, I reserve the right to confiscate any items that are deemed inappropriate. The items will be returned to a parent only. Girls, please do not bring makeup including lipstick, hand creams, lotions, perfumes, etc. Some students may be susceptible to allergies. Thanks!

Homework/Assignments

In order to keep track of assignments and tests, each student will record classroom activities and homework on a calendar that is provided each month by their teacher. Please check these calendars as this will keep you informed of all assignments. Expect that your child will have Math homework each night. Homework will be posted on the school web site: www.grenadaupper.org. Homework is due the next day and projects will be assigned a reasonable due date.

GUES Web Site   www.grenadaupper.org

Homework and class functions will be listed on the school web site under teacher R. Shaw. It will be updated each week with homework assignments and other class functions as they take place. Please check it out if you have access to the internet!

Progress Reports / Signed Papers

Progress reports are generated by the computer, so we will send progress reports half way through the nine weeks. This will tell your student’s current grades and any area of concern or achievement that we feel you would want to be informed of. Signed papers will be sent home on Tuesdays. Please sign in the space provided and write any comments necessary. If we feel that a conference needs to be scheduled, we will notify you when papers are sent home.

Report Cards

Reports cards are sent on the second Monday following examinations.

Schedule:

1st nine weeks - October 18

2nd nine weeks – January 11

3rd nine weeks - March 29

4th nine weeks

Social Studies

The Fourth grade curriculum focuses on Mississippi history. We will be learning the states and capitals along with abbreviations the first nine weeks.

Math

Math grades are determined through group work, seatwork grades, one-minute drills of basic facts - multiplication and division, accelerated math, and weekly tests. Math books will be used in the classroom, but may have homework in them from time to time. The topics we will cover are number theory, estimation and computation, geometry, division, fractions, decimals, percents, using data, exponents, negative numbers, coordinates and area, and probability. We will be using accelerated math in the classroom. Students have AM homework sheets every night. They are required to scan at least 3 times weekly. Each nine weeks they will receive an average grade on AM practices and tests. The students who reach their AM goal for the nine weeks will be treated to a pizza party.

Birthdays

We love to celebrate birthdays! However, since our time is so limited, we request that treats be simple, easy to pass out and hard to spill. If your child wishes to celebrate his/her birthday with the class, he/she is more than welcome to bring in treats on the day of their birthday or the day closest to it if it falls on a holiday or weekend. If a birthday falls during the summer, we will celebrate it in May, before school ends. If your child does not celebrate birthdays or other celebrations, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can accommodate them. Also, be sure to let us know if they suffer from any food allergies.

Personal Info:

I am married and have four sons and two granddaughters. My oldest son, Adam, is working in Texas, Christopher is at Holmes Community College, Hunter is a Senior and Stuart a Freshman at GHS.

I have lived in Coffeeville for most of my life and have managed to raise my boys there as well. I love the country life outdoors - ATV riding, fishing, gardening, and just sitting outside with a good book. I love to read!

My Classroom Philosophy:

My philosophy of teaching is based on my belief that a teacher is to:  promote positive learning and   provide a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Learning can and should be fun and students who are active participants learn much more than those whose participation is largely passive. I believe teachers that teach with clarity, passion, empathy, and sincere enthusiasm, are more likely to connect with learners and increase learner performance and mastery. I believe that every child is capable of learning and it is my responsibility to teach each student to reach their full potential.

My favorite quote:

No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.

What is expected of students in my classroom:

Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe

The classroom should be a safe place for all students, so I expect them to show respect and courtesy to everyone including classmates. Completing all class assignments and homework is important to enhance learning in the classroom. Students should walk down the hall from the classroom in an orderly fashion with no horse-playing or talking. If a child is fighting, shows threatening behavior, bullying or cursing it will automatically result in a referral to the office.

My homeroom Science Class enjoys using the microscopes while studying plant and animal cells. Shown left are D'Onterris George, Lakelcia Lusk, and others studying their slides of the cells. Bradley Terry demonstrates the use of the microscope while Kelvion Henry proudly displays his cell drawings.
