HAPPY NEW YEAR!I hope everyone had a great Christmas Break. It’s hard to even think about the school year being ½ over.January and February are two of THE most important months of our year as far as the curriculum is concerned. We are at the heart of 5th grade, and each day brings tons of new learning.
We will be working hard on fractions and measurement in math; adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions in language; matter, energy, and light in science; spelling, vocabulary, and reading skills in reading; as well as learning all 50 states, their abbreviations and capitals. It will be an intense few months, and I really need your help in keeping your child focused and well.We will be using a great deal of hand sanitizer each day!
I’ve changed the format of the spelling/vocabulary words for the second semester. All of the spelling and vocabulary words will be in our weekly story which we will be reading. This should make the words more relevant to the students. There are more spelling words, but students will also have the opportunity to take a spelling pre-test each Monday. If they make a 100 on the pre-test, they will only have to take the reading test on Friday and not another spelling test.
I look forward to a great 2nd half of the game.Thank you for all of your support from the sidelines!
Have a great week.

About the Teacher:
My name is Tina Sanford, and I teach a 4th/5th grade looping class. My class is self-contained, so I teach ALL subjects. This is my 4th year at GUES and my 4th year as a teacher. Before becoming a looping teacher I taught 4th/5th multiage. I have a business degree and an education degree from the University of Mississippi. I am married to Jeff Sanford, and we have one daughter, Claire, who is in the 6th grade.
Classroom Philosophy:
In my classroom, the "mission" lasts for two years. During this time, students will work toward becoming more responsible, independent, and confident. At the end of our time together, my goal is to see growth in all of these areas, and to also have a room full of students who are ready for middle school.
