Kim Rice

Welcome to Mrs. Rice's 4th and 5th Grade Looping Class

Self-Contained:  Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Lanugage Arts

Year’s experience:  15 years

Previous school or grade and subjects taught:  I have always taught in the Grenada School District.  This is my 3rd set of looping students.  Before looping, I taught fourth grade partnered with D. Amos.

College:  I graduated from Ole Miss in 1992. I received my Nation Board Certification in November of 2001.  I am currently enrolled in Ole Miss Graduate School.  I attend the campus here in Grenada one night a week from 4 PM until 10 PM.  (After teaching all day and being a student all night....On this day...I am TIRED!!)

Personal or family information:  I am married to Mike Rice and have three children.  Josh is 15 years old, Jason is 10 years old, and Kaylee is almost 6.  We have a home with several acres in Carroll County just off the Duck Hill Exit.  We enjoy family time and lots of various outdoor activites.  The kids love to hunt and fish and fourwheel ride.  Mike is a great mechanic and always working on something.  He works for a telephone company based in Jackson named TELEPAK.  He is in charge of the office in Inverness, MS.  He is currently hooking up the residents in Inverness with high speed internet and cable.  I love teaching, and I also have a photography business that I started about two years ago with my friend, Lisa Pickle.  Often on weekends and school vacations I can be found taking LOTS of pictures.  I also like to take tons of pictures of all my classroom students.  I enjoy scrapbooking and make a scrap book for each student to keep as a reminder the two years they spent in my classroom at Grenada Upper Elementary School.

Classroom Philosophy:

I do not know that this is a "Philosophy" but I love teaching.  I try to find fun and interesting ways to teach so that the children enjoy what they do.  We work hard in class and I expect a lot of my students.  I try to always be uplifting and upbeat and have a positive attitude.  I realize that my attitude affects the student's attitudes and try hard to set a good example.  I believe that all students can learn and that it is my responsibility to encourge learning and growth within my classroom.

Homework:

I really do not assign very much homework at all.  I do not like homework and try hard to get all our work done in class.  I work the children hard all day and I want them to have the least amount homework as possible.  Each week we have 20 vocabulary words.  Each night I expect them to write 5 words 5 times each, study those words and definitions and make a sentence with them.  On Friday we have a test on these words.  If students spend time studying five each night, there is nothing required Thursday except for a parent reviewing and calling out these words.  I encourage the students to read.  We do a lot of fun projects with books throughout the year.  The students see that I love reading and most of them choose to read on their own free time.

Multipication facts are a "big" goal for my classroom.  I require that all students memorize these facts.  Timed tests are given throughout the year and students are required to be able to make a 95 or higher on a one hundred problem/five minute timed test.

I also do a lot of "projects" that are fun for the family.  Sometimes this will be considered "homework" but as far as a set schedule...only the vocabulary words are required on a daily basis.  I will however, send extra work and notes home should your child need extra practice or help that extends beyond the normal classroom.

!!  Exercise  !!

Because weight and exercise are so much a part of today's society and news coverage...(and because I have put on some extra pounds and want to be healthy)...we are going to start walking as a class.  The first week we will walk 1/2 mile.  The second week we will increase to 1 mile.  As the children adjust to this and the weather cools off, we will add one lap around the building until we make it to 4 laps which is the same as 2 miles.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for your child to exercise and to get fresh air.  Should you not want your child to participate because of health reasons, please let me know as soon as possible.  If you ever would like to join us in our walk, we walk right after lunch.  We would LOVE to have you join us for lunch and our walk!  Thanks -
