The math/science focus of the Discovery Lab gives all GUES students opportunities for hands-on experiments and explorations. The activities and experiments conducted in the Lab correlate with the math/science curriculum frameworks of the State of Mississippi. The Lab integrates these concepts into the learning activities and incorporates technology, graphing, and measurement into the instructional process.
The Discovery Lab was partially funded by a Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration grant, using the Galaxy Model, which provided taped video science "field trips," lesson outlines, lab tables, computers, and science equipment. Hightower Oil Company also made contributions to the Lab. The Discovery Lab received a 2001 Award for Excellence from the Public Education of Mississippi. The Math/Science Discovery Lab was one of eleven programs chosen for 2001 recognition.
Mrs. Melody Shaw, instructor, works very hard preparing units that correlate with the state curriculum and the needs that teachers see within their own classroom. Joining the lab this year will be assistant instructor, Renee Moore. Throughout the 2010-2011 school year students will visit the for exciting hands on lessons to build a love for science.

2009-2010 Year Review
The Discovery Lab continued to grow and more hands on materials were added to the lab. Also, a few more pets became familiar faces to the students. This school year the lab had another Donors Choose project funded that will take place during the 2010-2011 school year. We are very excited about the materials that were donated and cannot wait to explore the world of Owls.
2008-2009 Year Review
The Discovery Lab received some much needed table tops and stools thanks to Jeff Pickle and Dr. Randy Poss. New shelves were added as well as a bright new paint job, special thanks to Rodney Shaw. A large overhead projector screen was also mounted on the lab's galaxy wall. We were very excited about the improvements made to the lab during 2008-2009.
Thanks to DonorsChoose the Discovery Lab received seven new microscopes. We love DonorsChoose.org!!

My first five years of teaching were in multi-age at GUES. My sixth year I taught a self-contained inclusion 5th grade Looping class. In 2007 I became a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Middle Childhood Generalist. I have many great teaching memories from the past years at GUES. I love teaching all subjects! I am very excited about teaching my third year in the Discovery Lab and focusing on the Science curriculum. To learn more about my plans in the lab you can click on my personal website above.
