Discovery Lab

The math/science focus of the Discovery Lab gives all GUES students opportunities for hands-on experiments and explorations. The activities and experiments conducted in the Lab correlate with the math/science curriculum frameworks of the State of Mississippi. The Lab integrates these concepts into the learning activities and incorporates technology, graphing, and measurement into the instructional process.

The Discovery Lab was partially funded by a Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration grant, using the Galaxy Model, which provided taped video science "field trips," lesson outlines, lab tables, computers, and science equipment. Hightower Oil Company also made contributions to the Lab. The Discovery Lab received a 2001 Award for Excellence from the Public Education of Mississippi. The Math/Science Discovery Lab was one of eleven programs chosen for 2001 recognition.

Mrs. Melody Shaw, instructor, works very hard preparing units that correlate with the state curriculum and the needs that teachers see within their own classroom.  Throughout the 2008-2009 school year students will visit the lab for an hour and a half every other week.

You can learn more about the lab and its' units by going to www.melodyshaw.com

The Discovery Lab welcomes new assistant teacher, Jon Haimes.  We are so glad that Mr. Haimes will be with us this year.

The Discovery Lab received some much needed table tops and stools thanks to Jeff Pickle and Dr. Randy Poss.  We are very excited about the improvements that have been made in the lab this school year.

 Units for the lab:

1st Nine Weeks- Amazon Voyage

2nd Nine Weeks- The Human Footprint

3rd Nine Weeks- Powering Up!

4th Nine Weeks- Heroic Measures

All units will last for eight weeks.  Please do not send students with folders, backpacks and/or purses to the lab. All supplies will be provided for them.  Any extra items brought will be sent back to the classroom to cut down on space issues.  All students will keep their work in the lab until the end of the unit.  I have a cubbie for each classroom and/or partner classes in order for me to see easily what has been covered with each class.

We will try to make up labs as much as possible throughout the year.  I will let you know in advance if I am going to be out for a conference or other scheduled event.

Teachers please make sure that you take them to the restroom before coming to lab.  Restroom activity will be limited for students once they enter.

I have three classroom sets of microscopes that can be checked out during the school year. Please sign up for these using the pink binder located by the teacher sign in table. I will make slides available based on our pacing guide.  Each morning myself or Mr. Haimes will bring them to your classroom.  Please make sure that someone returns them at the end of the day.  We will also have other items that you may checkout throughout the year.  Please preview the pink binder often to see what we have added.

1st Nine Weeks: Black

2nd Nine Weeks: Blue

3rd Nine Weeks: Red

4th Nine Weeks: Green

Our first M.I. parties were loads of fun!

The students made their own dessert and they reviewed Science at the same time.

The Amazon Voyage Unit

The students learned about the Amazon and the animals that inhabit this amazing place.

We had a friend from the Amazon, Andy the anaconda!  He was joined by Jet, the Texas Indigo Snake. The students enjoyed meeting our two visitors.

The students measured Andy and Jet. Finding out that Andy is around 28 feet long

was quite shocking for most of the students.

The students have also learned about camouflage and how important it is for the animals of the Amazon.  The students were challenged to create a camouflage pattern to hide a stingray in the lab.  They were told that if the stingray was not well hidden, he would be eaten!

We continued our unit of the Amazon by looking more closely at the insects that can be found here. The students used microscopes to preview different insect parts.  They were instructed to draw what they saw while previewing each slide.

Students were then told to use materials in a bag at their table and create a complete metamorphosis life cycle of an Owl butterfly.

You cannot learn about the Amazon without getting in over your head.  We had to find out what exactly was over our heads and larger than us in the Amazon.

How many kids do you think can fit on a Giant Waterlily?

We had nine, but could have put one more on the flower.

PEPPER, the Hermit Crab

Pepper is one of our three hermit crabs.  The students were observing him and looking closely at his pinchers. Thanks Allyn for donating Pepper to the Lab!

The fun continues with another pet: No Feet

Thanks Rodney for finding this animal for our students to observe.

No Feet shed his skin!!

Thanks Nathan for bringing in your wonderful bug collection to share with the students.  We enjoyed looking at all the bugs.

Time to learn more about plants!  What better way than breaking open pine cones, eating apples and dissecting flowers.
